Is it necessary to homologate the driving license in Andorra? How do I do it?

The driver’s license and its homologation is one of the procedures that generates more doubts around it. Many people who use a vehicle in their daily lives are wondering how they can get their driving license approved once they move to the Principality.

Today, from Wit we will talk about the options we have and we will solve all your doubts about how to carry out this procedure. Take note.

Andorran driving license

The first question we ask ourselves is whether our foreign driver’s license can be homologated to obtain an Andorran driving license, and the answer is yes.

Those foreigners who are holders of a residence permit in Andorra in any of the categories can obtain a national driving license. However, they are obliged to replace their driving license with the Andorran driving license within 6 months. after obtaining the relevant residence permit.

This is achieved by surrendering the foreign driver’s license to the authorities and complying with the Principality’s Highway Code.

On the other hand, it is important to note that Andorran residents can drive with other driver’s licenses once they have been residents for less than 6 months. However, as long as the carnet is still valid and is equivalent to the Andorran one.

How to get your driver’s license approved

A person formally residing in Andorra is obliged to complete this procedure. Within six months after obtaining the residence permit in Andorra, you must proceed with this process. In addition, this process takes an average of one month to be approved by the Andorran administration.

The homologation of the driver’s license is performed automatically, without the need for any previous examination, in the following cases:

  • Those issued by any member of the European Union, as long as there is a bilateral agreement in force on the homologation of driving licenses.
  • Those issued by States with legislation on permits, licenses and tests that are equivalent to the Andorran system.

Thus, the Andorran driver’s license is granted automatically with driver’s licenses from the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Cyprus, United Kingdom and Slovakia.

Documentation required for automatic approval

The documents required for such automatic homologation are as follows:

  • Certificate of residence of the Andorran municipality.
  • Medical certificate.
  • Color passport photo.
  • The original foreign driver’s license.

Documentation required for other countries

For the rest of the countries where there are no bilateral agreements or similar procedures, a series of additional documents are required that we will have to take into account:

  • A legal translation of the driver’s license stamped by the consulate of the corresponding foreign state.
  • Certificate of authenticity issued by the Department responsible for issuing the driver’s license.
  • Certificate of equivalence of categories for homologation, explaining in which categories the driver’s license is valid.

This permit must still be in force and applicants will take a practical driving test in Andorra during the following 2 years from the entry into force of their residency. In addition, if they fail to obtain these documents, they will have to face a full driving test during the first two years of their residence in the Principality.
